Developing and Managing Mediation Centers for Your Community

Regional Training Institutes (RTIs) are designed to help community mediation center directors and staff expand their skills, develop new programs, and find ways to increase their centers' positive effects in their communities. Subject areas in the Institute, chosen by NAFCM members via survey, include: Government Relations, Public Education, Evaluation, Center Administration, Program Development, Fund Development, Case Management and Volunteer Partnerships.

Trainings offered outside NAFCM

Divorce Mediation Training

 

This 24 hour course is designed for mediators who are interested in the practice of divorce

mediation. The training integrates substantive information with practice through interactive role

play experience. Prerequisite: Basic mediation training.

 

Where: CDSC’s offices, 60 Gore Street, East Cambridge

 

(near Lechmere T, Galleria, courthouses)

 

Cost: $695 ($675 if registration received by March 14th)

$595 for Volunteers with other Community Mediation Centers

$400 for CDSC Volunteers

 

Enrollment: Limited to 24. Enroll early!

 

Registrants who cancel before March 7th will receive a full refund.

Later cancellations will be refunded only if space is filled.

About the Distinguished Faculty:

 

Cynthia Bauman is a family attorney and mediator. She has

been affiliated with CDSC as a pro bono mediator since 1994

and was the Coordinator of Court Programs from 2000–2006.

 

Jeanne Cleary, a psychotherapist and mediator in private

practice, has had over 23 years of experience in clinical and

court-based work with families in the process of divorce.

Jeanne has designed trainings for high schools, religious

groups, and colleges and is currently Adjunct Faculty at

UMass/Boston Graduate Programs in Dispute Resolution.

 

David Hoffman practices family law and serves as a mediator

and arbitrator at the Boston Law Collaborative. He is recent

chair of the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution and co-author

of Massachusetts Alternative Dispute Resolution.

 

Brad Honoroff, an attorney, has had extensive experience

mediating, teaching and consulting in the ADR field. Formerly

on the faculty of UMass/Boston Graduate Programs in

Dispute Resolution, he co-mediates divorce cases at The

Mediation Group, where he is a principal.

 

Jane Honoroff is a psychotherapist and a mediator, with

over 30 years of clinical social work experience. She is Adjunct

faculty at BU School of Social Work, consultant to Greater

Boston Legal Services, and heads up the family mediation

unit at The Mediation Group, where she is a principal.

 

Joyce Kauffman specializes in family law, co-parent adoption,

and mediation, with an emphasis on legal issues affecting

lesbian and gay families. Attorney Kauffman is a past co-chair

of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Lesbian and

Gay Bar Association (MLGBA) and past chair of the MLGBA’s

Family Law Section.

 

Michael L. Leshin is a partner with the law firm of Ginsburg

& Leshin, LLP, where he specializes in family law and

mediation. He is a fellow of the Massachusetts chapter of

the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a past

president of the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation,

Inc. He is the author of the MCLE annual publication,

 

Massachusetts Family Law Sourcebook.

 

Gail Packer, a clinical social worker, has been Executive

Director of the Community Dispute Settlement Center since

1988. Previously she worked for 10 years in the Probate and

Family Court, mediating with families in the process of divorce.

 

Cynthia Runge, an attorney and mediator, is the Coordinator

of Court and Divorce Mediation Services at CDSC. Cynthia

mediates divorce matters privately and through North Shore

Community Mediation in Beverly, MA.

 

Eileen M. Shaevel served as an Associate Justice of the

Probate and Family Court from 1990 to 2001 after practicing

family law for almost 20 years. She is now engaged in a

private dispute resolution practice in Boston which offers

mediation, arbitration and case evaluation in family law and

probate matters.

 

I. Overview of Divorce Mediation

 

Legal and practice issues; custody and parenting; access

options and long-range planning for children; emotional

impact of divorce; introduction to Massachusetts law.

 

II. Property Division and

Non-Traditional Family Mediation

 

Spousal support, pensions and QDROS, health insurance

and materials to help the mediator guide the process to

completion. Also, gay, lesbian and paternity cases; married

vs. unmarried legal guidelines; case law including

Goodridge and beyond. Also, Hon. Eileen M. Shaevel

(ret.) presents a view of divorce from the bench.

 

III. Financial Issues in Divorce

 

Child support guidelines and financial planning;

introducing and managing legal and financial planning

choices with families in crisis.

 

IV. Reaching Closure

 

Drafting final product; avoiding pitfalls; skill development.

Ethical and practice dilemmas, challenging issues and

behaviors.
